Vidicom Computers had humble beginnings as Oscars Computers in 1999. Self taught in computer repair, Oscar Swanlund put his faith and intuition to the test in his garage. Within a short space of time, the company was renamed Vidicom Computers. The name was representative of the incredible evolution the company had undergone and was a clear indicator of its growing focus on video conferencing and establishing an audiovisual communication link between local businesses/residents with international business connections or family and friends.
As word of Vidicom’s reputation for providing quality service spread on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, the need for larger premises, complemented by a further two technicians became a reality. As demand grew, a move to its current store in Port Shepstone followed in 2004.
In the face of stiff local competition and despite the economic recession, Vidicom Computers has grown to become the largest supplier of computers, laptops, printers and other electronic and IT gadgets at the most affordable prices on the Lower South Coast. The stockholding of quality IT equipment is so large and varied that the company last year added a further 200 square metres to its existing floorspace as well as a number of additional staff members.
Recently launched, the new online store now brings the vast range of Vidicom products, sourced from reputable OEMs such as Dell and Hewlett Packard, to the rest of South Africa. Ordering the IT hardware products you need is as easy as 1,2,3.
Swanlund realised that service, quality and price don’t always coincide; you can usually provide good service and good quality, but at the expense of the pricing. He has managed to get all three to work as synergistically as possible.
Vidicom Computers can justifiably claim to be a pioneer in the supply of computer and IT hardware equipment, having been the first to stock products that other computer stores had not even heard of. The company’s mission is to, with integrity and honesty as its cornerstones, supply customers with any computer and IT hardware product they might need. Vidicom’s promise is that if they do not have an item in stock, they will source it within 48 hours from local suppliers.
The company boasts a staff of three managers, two salespeople, two counter salespeople, and four dedicated technicians, three administration personnel and a cartridge technician who specialises in remanufacturing and replenishing of printer cartridges, all with a collective 70 years’ experience in the IT industry.
